Toyota USA has unveiled the All-New 2027 Toyota Highlander, featuring a completely redesigned exterior and interior, with seating for up to seven passengers. It is Toyota’s first three-row battery-electric vehicle for the U.S. market and also the first BEV model to be assembled in the United States.
The new Highlander adopts a modern design with smooth body lines, bold wheel arches, full-width LED daytime running lights, and flush door handles to enhance aerodynamics. Inside, the cabin is equipped with a 14-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital driver display, customizable ambient lighting, and device charging points in every row. It also features a panoramic glass roof—the largest in Toyota’s lineup—adding a bright and airy feel to the interior.
The vehicle comes standard with an all-electric powertrain and is available in two grades: XLE and Limited. The XLE grade can be specified with either front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD).
-
XLE FWD is powered by a 77.0 kWh battery, producing 221 horsepower and 268 Nm of maximum torque.
-
XLE AWD offers a choice of 77.0 kWh or 95.8 kWh batteries, delivering 338 horsepower and 438 Nm of maximum torque.
-
Limited is available exclusively with AWD and a 95.8 kWh battery, producing 338 horsepower and 438 Nm of maximum torque.
AWD models are also equipped with Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control. All grades come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 and the Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system.
Driving Range and Charging
Manufacturer-claimed estimated driving ranges include:
-
XLE FWD, 77.0 kWh battery: 287 miles (approximately 462 km)
-
XLE AWD, 77.0 kWh battery: 270 miles (approximately 435 km)
-
XLE AWD, 95.8 kWh battery: 320 miles (approximately 515 km)
-
Limited AWD, 95.8 kWh battery: 320 miles (approximately 515 km)
The Highlander supports the North American Charging Standard (NACS) and is compatible with DC fast-charging stations, allowing charging from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes. It also supports Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging and comes with a 120V/240V dual-voltage charging cable. Additional features include battery preconditioning and Plug & Charge capability for automatic charging authentication.
The vehicle is built on an updated TNGA-K platform designed to accommodate a larger battery and increase interior space, along with enhanced noise and vibration reduction measures and acoustic glass. The new proportions feature a lower overall height, increased width, and longer wheelbase, resulting in a more stable stance and a roomier cabin. At the front, the Highlander features Toyota’s signature hammerhead design, with separate DRLs and a swept-back grille.
Inside, the cabin emphasizes openness and technology, featuring a digital instrument cluster, 64-color customizable ambient lighting, SofTex seats with heating, standard second-row captain’s chairs, and a third row capable of seating two adults. Convenience features include dual Qi wireless charging pads, USB-C ports throughout the cabin, rear climate controls, sunshades, multiple storage compartments, 18 cup holders, and a hands-free power tailgate.
Exterior color options include Spellbound, Wind Chill Pearl, Heavy Metal, Everest, Reservoir Blue, and Midnight Black Metallic, along with optional two-tone paint with a black roof. Interior color choices include Black, Portobello, and Misty Gray.
The 2027 Highlander becomes Toyota’s fourth BEV model, joining the bZ, bZ Woodland, and C-HR. Toyota plans to offer a total of 22 electrified models in the future. The new Highlander will be assembled in Kentucky, USA, with batteries supplied from Toyota’s battery assembly plant in North Carolina. Sales are expected to begin in late 2026 and continue into early 2027, with pricing to be announced closer to launch.
On the infotainment side, the vehicle features the latest Toyota Audio Multimedia system with 5G connectivity and voice control, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also includes a built-in recording system using the vehicle’s exterior cameras.
