IM Motors is preparing to launch a new full-size crossover in China under the name IM LS9, which will compete with the Li Auto L9 and other models. The new vehicle will enter the domestic market within this year.
IM Motors is a joint venture between SAIC and Alibaba, first launched in 2020 as a luxury car brand. Currently, the brand’s lineup includes four electric vehicles: the L6 and L7 sedans, and the LS6 (MG IM6) and LS7 crossovers. However, the brand has been facing sluggish sales in the highly competitive domestic market. According to China EV DataTracker, IM Motors sold 19,174 units between January and May 2025.
On June 30, spy shots of the IM LS9 crossover appeared online. Chinese automotive media identified the car by its distinctive steering wheel, which matches the design of other IM models — an oval-shaped, two-spoke wheel. The interior also features two wireless charging pads, two cup holders, a spacious storage compartment, and a large central display.
The IM LS9 is covered in camouflage, but its headlights appear to have a finalized production design. The overall front-end design of the LS9 resembles the new LS6, with a closed-off front fascia and a small air intake at the lower front bumper. The vehicle also features Y-shaped headlights connected by an LED strip.
The LS9 has a slightly sloping roofline, a LiDAR sensor, retractable door handles, and five-spoke wheels. The long distance between the B- and C-pillars suggests extra legroom for second-row passengers. The IM LS9 is a three-row SUV, but its seating configuration has yet to be revealed.
The LS9 is expected to use the same platform as other IM-branded models, the iO Origin architecture, which supports both BEV and EREV versions. Currently, there is no detailed information on the LS9’s specifications or powertrain, but it is expected to come in both BEV and EREV variants.
The BEV version of the IM LS9 is likely to feature a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system delivering a combined 670 horsepower, similar to the new LS6 model. For the EREV version, it may use a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine as a generator producing 153 horsepower, paired with an electric motor rated at 308 horsepower — the same powertrain setup used in the LS6 EREV.
